Massage

“Touch was never meant to be a luxury. It’s a basic human need. It’s an action that validates life and gives hope to both the receiver and the giver” – Irene Smith

Massage is one of the oldest natural healing therapies, which benefits every system of the body, both physically and psychologically. Remedial massage is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for therapeutic purposes. The healing powers of touch also enable us to communicate so much in terms of empathy and compassion to another individual.

As well as remedial or sports massage therapy, deeply nurturing treatments are also offered for pregnancy and the postnatal recovery period, where the focus can be on specific areas as well as full body treatments, including facial and scalp massage.

The fees for remedial, deep tissue massage, sports massage, pregnancy & postnatal massage in your home are charged in various time blocks:

90 Minutes£70
60 Minutes£50

All my treatments are MOBILE and carried out in the comfort of your own home. Please note* I have a strict ground floor policy. Mobile visits outside of Harrogate may incur added travelling costs. A therapy room in Harrogate can be made available at an increased charge.

Cancellations/rescheduling with less than 24 hours notice will be charged at full price

Sports Massage

Sports massage is based on Swedish massage, it’s a deep tissue massage  technique that focuses on problem areas. It can help in preparation for an event and optimise your recovery afterwards. Regular treatment as part of your training programme can help you build that consistent, injury free training block that allows you to progress. Sports massage is not just for the fit and your pain and discomfort does not have to be sports related to benefit.  Many people can develop postural issues through their work which may develop into chronic pain and discomfort. Sports massage can help alleviate your symptoms and get you back to your best.

When muscles are stressed they inhibit blood flow, impeding the distribution of oxygen and nutrients around the body. As a result toxins build up in the muscle and they may become inflamed. A sports massage helps loosen muscle tissues. Sports massage works on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. The purpose is to “unstick” muscle fibres in order to release tension, remove toxins and relax and sooth the muscles. This enables blood to circulate properly, releasing toxins from the muscles to aid recovery.

The benefits of sports massage therapy include:

  • Enhancing sporting performance
  • Increasing joint mobility
  • Improved muscle function
  • Reducing compacted tissue (knots)
  • Reducing postural imbalances
  • Prevention of scar tissue
  • Increased circulation

Sports massage therapy can be used to treat:

  • Back pain
  • Tension headaches
  • Sports injuries
  • Neck & shoulder pain
  • General stiffness in the joints
  • Foot pain

Ongoing medical conditions including carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, frozen shoulder, plantar fasciitis can benefit from regular massage.

 Pregnancy Massage

I also offer deeply nurturing treatments for pregnancy and the postnatal recovery period tailored to your own wants and needs, where the focus can be on specific areas as well as full body treatments, including facial and scalp massage.

The Benefits of Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy is a very special time for any woman – bringing joy and excitement but also additional physical and emotional pressures.  Massage can help support a mum-to-be through this period and beyond. Specially devised to meet the needs of expectant women, pregnancy massage can help alleviate the common aches and pains of pregnancy and reduce stress levels.  Baby also benefits as the “feel good” endorphins released by mum during massage are passed on to baby. Helping to both connect and bond during this sacred time.

Specific benefits of regular pregnancy massages include:

  • stimulating circulation – encouraging the distribution of essential nutrients and fluid to all the vital organs of the body, especially the placenta
  • releasing muscular tension, particularly around the upper back and shoulders and the lower back which can often suffer in later pregnancy
  • lymphatic drainage – eliminating toxins from the cells and helping reduce oedema (swelling due to fluid retention)
  • helping avoid varicose veins from developing
  • helping lower high blood pressure or keep blood pressure balanced
  • reducing emotional stress and anxiety, creating a sense of positive well-being
  • encouraging deep relaxation and peaceful sleep
  • helping to become more aware of and more comfortable with her own body and the natural changes it is going through.

This is also a time when a woman can feel “taken over” by the pregnancy, the focus on her bump, and any associated medical processes.  Pregnancy Massage can be a great way to restore the balance by providing a nurturing, relaxing environment, for you to focus on you and your needs.

What to expect

As with all my massages, the treatment is carried out in the comfort of your own home and tailored in line with your wants and needs.

As a guide, a normal pregnancy massage lasts for one hour using oils and involves mum-to-be lying comfortably on my prenatal bean bag, well supported by pillows and covered by towels and blankets to ensure warmth and dignity.  Gentle, nurturing massage is given to the back, neck and shoulders (with more attention to the lower back area in later pregnancy). An extended treatment can also include arms and hands, legs and feet and a restoring facial and scalp massage, if required.  At the choice of the client, gentle massage of the abdomen can also be given, with the oils helping nourish the skin and reduce stretch marks.

Ensuring safety for you and your baby

  •       Massage can then be carried out from 14 weeks to birth.

After the birth: Post-natal massage offers a great way to nurture and restore the body after the monumental changes that childbirth brings to a woman’s body.  Regular massages offers new mums a chance to step away from the physical and emotional demands of motherhood and invest in their own health and wellbeing.

Yorkshire Yoga

Great teacher 💜 Great classes 💜 Great venue 💜

We are delighted to have Aimee Bellwood join us at Yorkshire Yoga having led popular children/family and adult yoga classes in the Harrogate area for several years. Aimee brings with her a wealth of experience - including teaching yoga as a therapeutic tool alongside a regular sport/activity lifestyle, to help with injury prevention or recovery and has more recently trained and been working alongside cancer patients as part of the Active Against Cancer charity. Here is how Aimee describes her upcoming classes:

This is a traditional practice of yoga as exercise and many of the poses (asana’s) establish a firm foundation of yoga in other forms. The class will focus on poses in the set sequence of Ashtanga with importance placed on alignment and learning the sequence. The class will also have a finishing practice of core strengthening poses.
Ideal for those wishing to develop a home practice and learn, by heart a yoga sequence.

You can join Aimee on Wednesdays 6-7pm from 7th October. Beginners most welcome.

My Expert Midwife

There’s always a positive to every negative ☯️ A baby moon courtesy of forced self isolation 💜

Every cloud has a silver lining.

Did you know, since the Covid-19 lockdown began in the UK, mums and midwives across the country have seen an increase in the number of babies coming back up to their birth weight by day 5! - Something that has not been seen in decades!

It is totally normal for your baby's weight to decrease post birth, however in recent years, it's been known to take up to day 10, or longer, for babies to get back up to their birth weight. This meant, extra measures were advised if your baby's day 5 weigh-in didn’t reach the expected amount.

Interestingly, what the lockdown and self-isolation has shown us is that without a constant stream of visitors, mum and baby have had a better opportunity for uninterrupted bonding which seems to have hugely helped mums and babies to establish breastfeeding and feed for longer, helping them regain their weight far quicker!

Whilst this evidence from midwives and other professionals is only anecdotal, at this stage, we hope that, once the NHS workload has returned to normal, formal research can look into this data in greater detail as this could have a huge impact on how women and their partners prepare for bringing home their baby and breastfeeding.

Dani Bedding Mindful Hypnobirthing in North Yorkshire

New course dates for 2021 💜

🗓 NEW WORKSHOP DATES!! 🗓
Did you know our one day hypnobirthing workshops accompany the best selling book 'Mindful Hypnobirthing'? Written by clinical hypnotherapist Sophie Fletcher, the founder of www.Mindfulmamma.co.uk She devised the Mindfulmamma hypnobirthing method and found that there was no difference in the outcomes whether the course was taught over a number of weeks, a weekend or one day. Even virtually, during the current restrictions, zoom sessions are proving to be as successful at conveying the therapeutic effect during our workshops, as the in person events pre-lockdown.
She wanted to try and make hypnobirthing accessible to all so she set about designing a workshop that was short and cost effective yet still achieved the same fantastic outcomes.
Our one day workshops are £150. After the workshop you get ongoing support from me for free, for as long as you need it and access to an online support group.
If you want to find out more about positive birthing during unprecedented times, please get in touch or take a look at my website www.headtoheal.uk #mindfulmamma

Calming Golden Breath practice with Yoga for 2

Do you 'own' your breath? Try this wonderful calming breathing practice to caress and comfort a tired and hardworking mind and body. Golden Thread Breathing with me, Dani Bedding. Enjoy the peacefullness that follows....
To practise calming Golden Thread Breath visualise a beautiful spool of golden thread just in front of your lips. Start by softening your lips and relaxing your jaw. As you exhale imagine you are trying to gently blow the spool of thread away from you. You could even imagine sunlight shimmering on the golden thread as it moves further and further away from your gently pursed lips. Keep your mouth and jaw as relaxed as possible. Tensing this area of the body may also cause you to tense your pelvic floor which may not help the effectiveness of your contractions. If you regularly practice this breathwork during pregnancy, it will become more familiar and therefore easier to focus on during labour #HypnobirthingNYorkshire #yogafor2 #headtoheal #mindfulmamma

💕💕During such strange and unprecedented times here is a virtual (((hug))) for all my wonderful pregnant and postnatal yoga clients 💕💕

Researchers have discovered something fantastic. When a hug lasts 20 seconds, there is a therapeutic effect on the body and mind. The reason is that a sincere embrace produces a hormone called "oxytocin", also known as the love hormone. This substance has many benefits to our physical and mental health, helps us, among other things, to relax, to feel safe and to calm our fears and anxiety. This wonderful tranquilizer is offered free of charge every time we have a person in our arms, to cradle a child, to cherish a dog or a cat, dancing with our partner, the closer we get to someone or simply just to hold the shoulders of a friend.
A famous quote by psychotherapist Virginia Satir goes, “We need 4 hugs a day for survival. We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” Whether those exact numbers have been scientifically proven remains to be seen, but there is a great deal of scientific evidence related to the importance of hugs and physical contact.
So ....Here are some reasons why we all should hug::

1. STIMULATES OXYTOCIN

Oxytocin is a neurotransmitter that acts on the limbic system, the brain’s emotional centre, promoting feelings of contentment, reducing anxiety and stress, and even making mammals monogamous- The bonding hormone 😍 It is the hormone responsible for us all being here today. You see this little gem is released during childbirth, supporting bonding, the desire to nurture and boosting milk flow. New research from the University of California suggests that it has a similarly civilising effect on human males, making them more affectionate and attentive to their newborn. When we hug someone, oxytocin is released into our bodies by our pituitary gland, lowering both our heart rates and our cortisol levels. Cortisol is the hormone responsible for stress, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

2. CULTIVATES PATIENCE

Connections are fostered when people take the time to appreciate and acknowledge one another. A hug is one of the easiest ways to show appreciation and acknowledgement of another person 😘 The world is a busy, hustle-bustle place and we’re constantly rushing to the next task. By slowing down and taking a moment to offer sincere hugs throughout the day, we’re benefiting ourselves, others, and cultivating better patience within ourselves.

3. PREVENTS DISEASE

Affection also has a direct response on the reduction of stress which prevents many diseases 🤢 The Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine says it has carried out more than 100 studies into touch and found evidence of significant effects, including faster growth in premature babies. In adults - reduced pain, decreased autoimmune disease symptoms, lowered glucose levels in children with diabetes, and improved immune systems in people with cancer.

4. STIMULATES THYMUS GLAND

Hugs strengthen the immune system. The gentle pressure on the sternum and the emotional charge this creates activates the Solar Plexus Chakra 🧡 This stimulates the thymus gland, which regulates and balances the body’s production of white blood cells, which keep you healthy and disease free.

5. COMMUNICATION WITHOUT SAYING A WORD

Almost 70 percent of communication is nonverbal 🤐 The interpretation of body language can be based on a single gesture and hugging is an excellent method of expressing yourself nonverbally to another human being or animal. Not only can they feel the love and care in your embrace, but they can actually be receptive enough to pay it forward to others based on your initiative alone.

6. SELF-ESTEEM

Hugging boosts self-esteem, especially in children. The tactile sense is all-important in infants. A baby recognizes its parents initially by touch. From the time we’re born our family’s touch shows us that we’re loved and special. The associations of self-worth and tactile sensations from our early years are still imbedded in our nervous system as adults. The cuddles we received from our Mum and Dad while growing up remain imprinted at a cellular level, and hugs remind us at a somatic level of just that. Hugs, therefore, connect us to our ability to self love 🥰

7. STIMULATES DOPAMINE

Everything everyone does involves protecting and triggering dopamine flow. Low dopamine levels play a role in the neurodegenerative disease Parkinson’s as well as mood disorders such as depression. Dopamine is responsible for giving us that feel-good feeling, and it’s also responsible for motivation! Hugs stimulate brains to release dopamine, the pleasure hormone 🧠 Dopamine sensors are the areas that many stimulating drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine target. The presence of a certain kinds of dopamine receptors are also associated with sensation-seeking.

8. STIMULATES SEROTONIN

Reaching out and hugging releases endorphins and serotonin into the blood vessels and the released endorphins and serotonin cause pleasure and negate pain and sadness and decrease the chances of getting heart problems, helps fight excess weight and prolongs life. Even the cuddling of pets has a soothing effect that reduces the stress levels 🐶 Hugging for an extended time lifts one’s serotonin levels, elevating mood and creating happiness.

9. PARASYMPATHETIC BALANCE

Hugs balance out the nervous system. The skin contains a network of tiny, egg-shaped pressure centres called Pacinian corpuscles that can sense touch 👐👐👐and which are in contact with the brain through the vagus nerve. The galvanic skin response of someone receiving and giving a hug shows a change in skin conductance. The effect in moisture and electricity in the skin suggests a more balanced state in the parasympathetic nervous system – The system that promotes rest, digestion and relaxation.
